Attendance Policy

Student Attendance Policy

If your student is absent, please call the attendance line (415) 695-5701 or email the Attendance Clerk, Brendan McCarthy at mccarthyb@sfusd.edu and leave a message that includes following information:

  • Student’s Full Name and School

  • Phone number

  • Date of the absence(s) (Month/Day/Year)

  • Email Address

  • Reason for absence

ADDITIONALLY, when your student returns to school, they must bring a note to the Attendance Clerk in the Main Office that includes the following information:

  • Student’s Full Name and School

  • Phone number

  • Date of note

  • Email Address

  • Date of the absence(s) (Month/Day/Year)

  • Parent/Guardian Signature

  • Reason for absence (Note that absences are listed as excused or unexcused. If you are unsure of a valid excuse reason, please refer to the SFUSD Student Handbook)

  • If the student is absent for more than three days, due to an illness, they must return with a note from a doctor.

If a student gets sick at school and needs to go home, they must first go to the Nurse in the Wellness Center (who will call parent/guardian) for a permit to leave.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO MISS SCHOOL BECAUSE OF A FAMILY TRIP OR EMERGENCY, THERE MUST BE A WRITTEN REQUEST MADE TO THE PRINCIPAL FOR APPROVAL!

For example, if you know you are going to an out of town family reunion and will be absent on a Friday before the weekend, bring a note from home at least TWO WEEKS before the trip so it can be excused and not count as a cut!

WERE YOU ABSENT? TARDY? If you missed or were late to class due to a valid reason, you MUST turn in your note (signed and completed by your parent/guardian) to the Attendance Ambassador within 3 days.

WHAT IS AN EXCUSED ABSENCE? Illness, hospital stay, medical appointment, funeral, other special circumstance pre-approved in writing by the principal.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU HAVE AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE OR TARDY? The following supports and outreach are designed to support your student in reversing a pattern of missed school. If a pattern of negative attendance  becomes an ongoing issue the SFUSD  SARB systems will take over, enlisting the support of Attendance Liaisons, districts support services, and the legal system.

UNEXCUSED TARDIES

  • 1st - 3rd Tardy to Class

  • Teacher will track and may result in in-class logical consequence including teacher meeting

  • 4th Tardy to Class

5th Tardy to Class

You will be referred for a meeting with an Administrator, which will result in a Parent/Guardian conference & Attendance Contract

Your case will be discussed by ASF’s SAP Team for interventions. A review of your Attendance Contract will take place.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

1st Absence

  • Teacher will track and may result in in-class logical consequence including teacher meeting

2nd Absence

You will be issued a 2nd Declaration of L.egal Truancy Letter. Your case will be discussed by ASF’s SAP Team for interventions

6th + Absence

HABITUAL TRUANCY: Should a student be absent for 10% of the school year, or 18 days over the course of the year, they will be considered Chronically Truant. A student’s truancy is calculated as follows:

     3 periods absent = 1 day absent

   3 tardies =

1 period absent

18 days absent annually =  Chronically Truant

For more information refer to the Attendance Guidelines in the SFUSD Student Handbook.

Compulsory Education

The State of California Education Code Section 48200-48208 requires that every person between the ages of 6 and 18 attend school full-time, unless exempted. Therefore, schools are required to have written documentation for student absences and to record such absences as excused or unexcused. Please note that all absences are reported on the school report card and transcripts even if they are excused. An excuse note clears the student’s record for truancy purposes and allows the student to make up missed work and exams.

Excessive Absenteeism

When absences become excessive, the school may request a doctor’s note or a visit to your home from our school nurse. In addition, if you are receiving cash aid from the San Francisco County Human Services Agency for your child, your aid may be stopped or lowered if your child’s attendance does not improve.

Truancy

Education Code Section 48260 defines a truant student as one who has been absent from school without a valid excuse three or more days, or tardy in excess of 30 minutes on each of three or more days, or any combination thereof, in a school year. You or your child may be taken to court, ordered to pay fines, may be at risk for reduction of CALWORKS or subject to other penalties for breaking the state’s attendance laws.
