About The Academy - SF @ McAteer

SFUSD's Best Kept Secret

The Academy - SF first and foremost focuses on the three Rs – Relationships, Relevance and Rigor.

At the Academy, we believe in using Restorative Practices throughout the school day, and that strong RELATIONSHIPS are the most fundamental part of a successful school. If students do not feel supported and cared for when they are on campus, then their academic and social-emotional success in school is compromised.

Additionally, if students do not feel like what they are learning matters to them, and is not being taught using RELEVANT pedagogy, then they are less engaged and less likely to have a positive academic experience.

And, if students have a positive relationship with their teachers and staff members, and they enjoy a relevant learning experience, then as a school we can provide them with RIGOROUS curriculum and expectations. The Academy’s small school setting allows our teachers to create an effective learning environment by working closely with students and their families in building a strong community.

Within this community, teachers are able to give more individual attention to students and communicate regularly with parents. Our administrators, like our teachers, work to individualize experiences for stakeholders by welcoming parents to drop in to school whenever they like discuss the best way to serve families. As a small school, between our two administrators we know every student on campus and are very hands on with all student support issues that arise.

The Academy offers a rigorous and relevant curriculum to meet the needs of our diverse student body, and students receive college counseling all four years aided by a two full-time academic counselor and two full-time college counselors. The Academy is co-located with Ruth Asawa School of the Arts at the former McAteer campus, however, is a different school.
